The fact that this group of Canadian Sunshine Poppers never troubled the U S chart too much doesn't mean they were no good it simply means that not everybody got a bite of the cherry. The Sugar Shoppe were as good as anybody and in their native country they were called "Canada's Mamas & Papas".
After a couple of local singles the first of which was a version of Julie Andrews' Thoroughly Modern Milie they signed with the Capitol label and made an album of 5 original songs the rest covers.Big names became involved including supersession drummer Hal Blaine,Mort Garson who acted as arranger and Al de Lory who once cut a single for one of the Phil Spector labels
The booklet has notes by ex members about how they found the songs and also includes a facsimile of the original sleeve notes
The only one to achieve lasting fame was Victor Garber who was in the recent Titanic movie
ESSENTIAL SUNSHINE POP CLASSIC PRODUCED BY AL DE LORY FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES! FIRST TIME ON CD! In 1967, THE SUGAR SHOPPE began in Toronto as a studio project. Lead Shoppe-keeper Peter Mann teamed up with vocalist Laurie Hood and Lee Harris and London, Ontario vocalist and future Titanic star Victor Garber. After having some success in Canada, the quartet set their sights on America and signed to Capitol Records the following year. Produced by Wrecking Crew session musician/Glen Campbell producer Al De Lory The Sugar Shoppe features a bright and breezy L.A. soft pop sound, with a hint of psychedelia akin to The Mamas & The Papas and The 5th Dimension. Arranged by lounge legend/electronic music pioneer Mort Garson, the writer of Ruby & the Romantics Our Day Will Come. Also included here are mono single mixes of four songs from the album. Mastered by Alan Brownstein FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES! The full-colour booklet includes rare photos and extensive liner notes featuring the participation of original band members! Produced for reissue by Steve Stanley.
Marketed as a Canadian Mamas & Papas I was very expectant of this album. It has a few moments but in general it's average for its genre. Seeing a two women-two men band just makes me wish the excellent 'The Free Design' had made more albums back in the day........oh well.
